Bella & Boy

A father. A son. The sea.

Koa is 9, non-verbal and autistic. On the water, he comes alive. His father Nharyan is casting off from Iluka this July, and documenting every mile.

Support the voyage

Welcome to Bella and Boy.

This is all about Koa, my 9 year old beautiful boy, his challenges and a journey to help heal and balance him and his family. Bella is the boat and together we are sailing towards connection with the natural world where Koa thrives.

We invite you to follow this adventure with all its ups and downs and share with us what hopefully will be an unforgettable voyage of exploration in every sense.

Watch our story

"When Koa is on the water, the outbursts settle. Joy overcomes his frustrations. He becomes, fully, himself."

There are 1 in 23 children in Australia navigating autism. Most are exhausted, not by their child, but by a world that was never designed for them. This is one family's story, documented in real time, for every family that has ever wondered if there is another way.

1 Boat. One decision. One story worth telling.

Iluka to the Whitsundays, and beyond.

In July 2026, Nharyan and Koa cast off from Iluka, NSW, aboard Bella, a 40-foot sloop that has already carried them to Fiji and back.

The plan: sail north. Hervey Bay. The Whitsundays. Further if the wind allows.

On board: Nharyan at the helm, Koa at the bow, and a support worker whose job is to keep Koa safe while Nharyan keeps them all afloat.

Every leg of the journey will be documented for the Bella & Boy YouTube channel. An honest, unfiltered record of a father and his son on the open water.

Bella & Boy on YouTube

The Bella & Boy YouTube channel will document the full voyage — the sailing, the hard days, the moments when Koa surprises everyone including himself.

No scripts. No filters. Just a father, his son, and the Australian coast.

We're looking for someone special.

Bella needs a crew member who can look after Koa while Nharyan is at the helm. This isn't a typical support worker role. It's a live-aboard position on a sailing boat, documenting a once-in-a-lifetime journey up the Australian coast.

The Role
  • Live-aboard support worker for Koa, a 9-year-old non-verbal autistic boy with ADHD
  • On-deck presence during maneuvers — your focus is Koa, Nharyan's focus is sailing
  • Compassionate, patient, and energetic — Koa is full of life and needs someone who matches his energy
  • Experience with autism essential — sensory needs, non-verbal communication, behavioural support
  • Sailing experience highly regarded — you'll be at sea for weeks at a time
  • Flexible, resilient, and comfortable with the unexpected — this is a documentary voyage, not a holiday
  • Departure: Iluka, NSW, July 2026. Destination: Whitsundays and beyond
What's on Offer
  • Above-award salary, funded through the voyage budget
  • Live-aboard accommodation on Bella — your home for the journey
  • Part of an extraordinary documentary project reaching a national audience
  • Work alongside a dedicated father doing something no one has done before
  • Travel the Australian coast — Whitsundays, Hervey Bay, and beyond
  • An experience that will define your career in disability support

Think you're the right fit?

Send us a short introduction — who you are, your experience with autism and sailing, and why this voyage speaks to you.

This journey belongs to the whole family — including those who stayed behind.

Aila wrote this for Nharyan's birthday. She drew Bella before she'd ever sailed on her.

This isn't about escape.

It's about a father paying attention.

It's about a boy who speaks in other ways.

It's about finding out what's possible when you stop waiting for the right moment and just sail.
